Lancaster, Los Angeles County
Each spring the hills west of Lancaster turn orange with California poppies. The state set aside the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in 1976, about 15 miles from town, and lets the flowers grow without planting or watering. The bloom usually peaks from mid-March into April, and its size varies with the winter rain.
